Hot water from the fireplace. They are currently very popular - and no wonder: water-bearing fireplaces effectively help to reduce heating costs. What's more, the dual function means that the firewood used is used twice, making it highly efficient. We asked Martin Bauer, Head of Marketing & Sales, about the benefits and requirements.
Martin, you are responsible for Marketing and sales at Spartherm. In your opinion, when does it make sense to install a water-bearing fireplace?
Bauer: A water-bearing stove always helps to save energy costs. If you know exactly how much power you need, you can choose the right combustion chamber size. And this is exactly what you should clarify or calculate in advance. Stoves that support the heating of the room have proven to be particularly effective. They are coupled with other energy sources and ensure a positive environmental balance.
Are there other things to consider before buying?
Bauer: A water-bearing fireplace or wood-burning stove generally requires more space than a conventional appliance, as the corresponding connections have to be made. This is best done by a specialist company, as the intervention in the heating system should not be taken lightly. If you want to heat efficiently throughout the winter with the help of firewood, you should also have a suitable storage space. An example: If the stove has an output of 6 kW, then approx. 1.5 to 1.8 kg of firewood is required per hour. The storage space should be correspondingly large.
How do Spartherm's water-bearing fireplaces work?
Bauer: Our water-bearing fireplaces contain a heat exchanger above the combustion chamber. This component stores excess energy from the flue gas. The cold heating water flows into the heat exchanger and is heated there. Once it has reached a certain temperature, it is transferred to a buffer tank. From there, it can be used both in distant rooms and at later times. You have a kind of "hot water accumulator" in the house, whose heat output can be called up when needed.
In your opinion, what is the advantage of a water-bearing stove?
Bauer: This type of heating is not only CO2-neutral and cost-saving. You can also enjoy the view of the crackling fire and benefit from the radiant heat. If you ask me, that's a multiple benefit.
AMBIENTE A4 H2O
The large panoramic window leaves no doubt: This stove is a real eye-catcher. You can also customize the cladding and fireclay in a variety of colours. But it's also practical: a concealed reservoir supplies your heating system with hot water.

PIKO H2O
The Piko H2O also has a built-in heat exchanger that makes the energy obtained available to the buffer tank of your central heating system. Sounds clever? It is! While you enjoy the flames through the double-sided viewing window, the Piko saves you money at the same time.
