Winter is coming to an end and the heating season is drawing to a close. Your fireplace has reliably provided cozy warmth during the cold months. And now? What can and should you actually do with your fireplace when the outside temperatures rise again? True to the motto "After heating is before heating", summer is the ideal time to prepare your fireplace for the next heating season. And if you like, you can even give it a decorative touch during the transitional period.

Warmth in the transitional period: is it okay to light the fireplace in summer?

Yes, you can light your fireplace in summer too - and it can actually have some benefits! In addition to the cozy atmosphere, regular lighting helps to prevent excessive moisture in the chimney.

Of course, this doesn't mean that you should light it on hot summer days at 25 degrees or more, but your fireplace is a practical addition, especially in the transitional period. When temperatures suddenly drop or a cool spring evening calls for comfort, the rapid warmth of the fireplace ensures pleasant temperatures. Your living space will be comfortably warm in just a few minutes.

Tip: Is your fireplace not drawing in summer? This could be because the outside temperature is too high. From around 15 degrees, the temperature difference between inside and outside may be too low to create a chimney draught. In this case, try a so-called pilot light at the base of the chimney or in the cleaning opening of the chimney.

Chimney maintenance in summer: the ideal time for cleaning

The summer break is the perfect time to give your chimney a thorough clean and prepare it for the coming winter. Admittedly, this may not sound particularly exciting and is often put off. But if you do it now in a relaxed manner, you can start the next heating season stress-free.

Here is a brief overview of what should be cleaned:

  • Cleaning the flue pipe: Deposits such as soot and ash can impair the operation of your fireplace and endanger safety. Thorough cleaning will ensure that your fireplace continues to work properly after the summer break. Regular cleaning - at least once a year - is essential, ideally before the start or at the end of the heating season.
  • Cleaning the interior: Remove excess ash from the firebox, but leave a small amount behind. The remaining ash helps to bind moisture.
  • Window care: A clear window not only provides the best view of your fire, but is also an indicator of clean combustion. Use special glass cleaners and soft cloths or kitchen paper to remove soot and dirt from the glass.

Not to forget: In addition to cleaning, you should use the summer break to check the safety of your fireplace:

  • Check the chimney: Blockages caused by soot or bird nests can be dangerous. If necessary, have the chimney cleaned by a specialist.
  • Check seals and hinges: Check door seals and moving parts. Defective seals not only lead to inefficient combustion, but also to increased soot formation.

Tip: If you are unsure, call in a specialist. This saves time and ensures that your fireplace works optimally.

Does your fireplace smell in summer?

Sometimes an odor occurs in summer even after thorough cleaning of the fireplace. Here's how you can prevent it:

  • Ventilate and clean: Good chimney care prevents many odors. Keep the door slightly open to allow moisture to escape.
  • Scent solutions: Place scented candles or herbs in the fireplace. Natural scents such as lavender or lemon provide freshness.
  • Activated charcoal: Neutralizes odours and creates a pleasant indoor climate.

A highlight even without a fire: decorating the fireplace in summer

Just because your fireplace isn't burning doesn't mean it has to remain invisible! Decorating your fireplace in summer is a great way to showcase it creatively. These ideas will turn it into an eye-catcher:

  • Decorate the interior: Place candles, fairy lights or dried flowers in the combustion chamber. This way, your fireplace remains a real highlight even in summer. But keep in mind: If you use real candles, be sure to place something underneath the candles. Otherwise the wax can damage your fireplace.
  • Use the space: Place plants or vases on the fireplace to create a summery atmosphere.
  • Repurpose the wood basket: Instead of firewood, you can stylishly store blankets or books in the wood basket.
