Pine cones as a chimney starter

This variant not only works reliably, but also looks really pretty. Beautifully packaged in a jar, the wax-coated pine cones are the ideal gift idea for all fireplace lovers.

What you need:

  • Dry pine cones
  • Old wax remnants (e.g. candle stubs)
  • Pot and bowl for the water bath
  • Baking paper or newspaper
  • Optional: string made from natural fibers (e.g. cotton)

And this is how it works:

  1. Allow the pine cones to dry completely.
  2. Melt the wax residue in a bain-marie and remove the wick residue.
  3. Dip the pine cones into the liquid wax and repeat this step several times to achieve an evenly thick layer of wax.
  4. Leave the cones to harden on baking paper or newspaper.

Optionally, you can also wrap the pine cones with the string before dipping them into the liquid wax. It is important that you leave a small end of the string sticking out. This should also be coated with wax and will then serve as a fuse.

Make your own chimney starter from wax and egg carton

If you want to make a small supply of firelighters for the coming heating season with little effort, this option is ideal for you. And the best thing is that you probably already have most of the materials you need at home.

What you need:

  • Old egg cartons
  • Filling material of your choice (e.g. newspaper, sawdust or wood wool)
  • Old wax scraps (e.g. candle stubs)
  • Pot and bowl for the water bath
  • Baking paper or newspaper as a base

And this is how it works:

  1. Press the filling material into the hollows of the egg cartons.
  2. Melt the wax residue in a bain-marie and remove the wick residue.
  3. Pour the liquid wax over the cavities so that the carton and filling material bond.
  4. Leave to dry.
  5. Separate the individual trays.

That's how quickly and easily you can make your own wax lighters. You can easily portion the lighter. It is therefore perfect if you prefer to have firelighters to hand.

Emergency firelighter without wax

Do you need a stove lighter on the spur of the moment or do you want it to be particularly uncomplicated? Then this variant is your perfect "emergency lighter" - no wax, no melting and no waiting time.

What you need:

  • Empty toilet roll
  • Wood wool or dry lint or fluff (e.g. from the vacuum cleaner)

And this is how it works:

  • Fill the toilet roll tightly with lint or wood wool - done!

Tip: You can also cut the roll into pieces afterwards. This gives you several lighters from one roll.

Make sure that the fluff or lint from the vacuum cleaner does not contain any plastic residue and is only made of natural material. If you're not sure whether this is the case, it's better to use wood wool and play it safe.

You should pay attention to this with DIY firelighters

To ensure that you can make and use your homemade firelighters without hesitation, you should pay attention to the following points:

  • Only use dry, natural materials (no coated or painted leftovers).
  • Always melt the wax scraps in a bain-marie and process the hot wax carefully.
  • Store the finished DIY firelighters in a dry place - they will last longer and work perfectly.

With these tips and ideas for making your own wood lighters, nothing stands in the way of your next cozy evening by the fire.
