But how can you tell whether a fireplace is really modern, efficient and future-proof? And what requirements does your 2025 wood-burning stove actually have to meet? This is exactly where we come in: We show you which features a fireplace should definitely have - and what you really need to look out for when buying one.

BImSchV - the basis for everything

No matter which fireplace you have in mind: It must comply with the current Federal Immission Control Ordinance (BImSchV) and the EU Ecodesign Regulation. This is one of the basic fireplace requirements in 2025. The BImSchV sets the limit values for dust, carbon monoxide and efficiency in Germany. The Ecodesign Ordinance also stipulates limit values for nitrogen monoxide and gaseous carbon throughout Europe. A fireplace that does not comply with these regulations may no longer be installed and operated in Germany.

But don't worry: compliance with the regulations is standard for modern fireplaces. Nevertheless, it is worth taking a closer look: A fireplace that falls well below the prescribed limit values ensures that you can heat with a clear conscience in the long term.

You can find out exactly what the BImSchV regulates, which limit values apply and what you can use as a guide in our blog post on the BImSchV. There we explain step by step what is important and what you should pay attention to.

High efficiency & low emissions - beyond the obligation

A truly modern fireplace not only meets the legal requirements, but also maximizes efficiency and environmental friendliness. Look for a high energy efficiency class (ideally: A or A+) and particularly low particulate emissions - these are clear indicators of economical consumption and low emissions.

Also pay attention to details such as a particularly tight construction, modern air ducts and a cleverly designed combustion chamber. All of this ensures that your firewood is optimally utilized - so you need less wood, save on heating costs and reduce your emissions to a minimum.

This means you not only heat more cleanly, but also more cheaply - year after year.

Technical sophistication that makes all the difference

A modern fireplace not only impresses with its efficiency, but also with well thought-out details.

  • For example, look out for a pane flushing system - it ensures that your viewing pane stays clean for a long time and you have a clear view of the fire.
  • Optimized secondary and, if necessary, tertiary air ducts improve combustion.
  • Especially in well-insulated new builds with a ventilation system, an outside air connection is also crucial - this keeps the air quality in the house stable.
  • A real plus: infrared-coated glazing in the combustion chamber increases the combustion temperature through reflection, improves combustion and reduces soot build-up on the pane. At the same time, the radiation distance is reduced - so you need to keep less distance from the fireplace.
  • Particularly innovative: Our fireplace systems - such as the Zirkon or the Saphir - have insulation on the back, which makes it possible to place the fireplace directly in front of flammable walls - without a safety distance. This saves valuable space and opens up new design possibilities in modern living concepts.
  • Solid combustion chamber linings, flexible connection options and quiet closing systems round off the overall package. They stand for durability, convenience and a noticeable difference in everyday life.

Smart assistance functions for more comfort & safety

Optional assistance functions offer even more convenience. These smart helpers make your fireplace more efficient, safer and more convenient:

  • S-THERMATIK NEO
    • Automatic control of the air supply in the combustion process ensures optimum energy generation, lower emissions and reduced wood consumption.
  • S-ESAM 3.0
    • Opening the window at the touch of a button ensures greater safety and ease of use. The delayed opening prevents flue gases from escaping.
  • S-USI II
    • By monitoring the differential pressure between the fireplace and ambient air, the vacuum generator can be switched off automatically at critical values - for safe parallel operation of fireplace systems and ventilation systems or extractor hoods.
  • S-ELA
    • The S-ELA electric flue gas damper for fireplace inserts automatically regulates the chimney draught to a target value and thus ensures more efficient combustion.

You can decide for yourself which assistants round off your fire experience. You can find more details on our website.

Design & customization: your fireplace, your style

In 2025, a modern fireplace must do more than just provide efficient heat: It should adapt to your life - aesthetically and practically. This includes offering design variety and maximum design freedom.

Whether clear lines, a striking format or subtle colors - your fireplace should be so versatile that it blends harmoniously into your individual living concept. This also means that you can choose between different panel shapes, panel colors and installation options. This way, your fireplace becomes part of your living experience.

Particularly interesting for contemporary architecture: models that can be mounted directly on the wall to save space. This creates space - visually and functionally.

In short: a fireplace must adapt to your style - not the other way around.
